This ancient roman marble fragment depicts a hand holding a shallow drinking bowl, known as a patera, or phiale. Numerous statues survive from the ancient world with figures holding such vessels. This ‘disembodied’ ancient hand has the uncanny qualities of a surrealist object when placed resting on, or emerging from a piece of furniture.
