Emily Young’s aesthetic is profoundly rooted in classical composition and draws directly from the art of a range of ancient cultures. The form of Moon Light II explores the sinuous and voluptuous curvature of classical female figures, as exemplified by the ancient Greek sculpture known as the Aphrodite of Knidos, carved by Praxiteles in the 4th century B.C. The abstract and stylised form of the work appears to reference archaeological fragments, which provided modern artists of the twentieth century with an aesthetic precedent for their pursuit of biomorphic and geometric abstraction.
