Emily Young, often heralded as ‘Britain’s greatest living stone sculptor’, creates works that are deeply rooted in the ancient tradition of direct carving. Dream Time exemplifies Young’s fascination with the most elemental sculptural material—marble. Here she has selected a specimen with a red and ochre tone, that is enriched with calcite crystals.
Young’s aesthetic is profoundly inspired by the ancient art of the Mediterranean and Near East, including those of Greece and Turkey. In their classical composition, her heads have a timeless quality that evoke the stillness and monumentality of antiquity. Her use of quarried stone also raises questions about our relationship with the Earth and is an attempt to stimulate urgent discussions regarding the endurance and preservation of our shared environment.
