Caro found inspiration for Seated Figure from a figure by Gustave Courbet – resulting in this sculpture finding an architectural form that Caro noted was all ‘about space contained. It's about the empty air enclosed by the form’.

Seated Figure (another cast) was exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 1955 at what was Caro’s first show highlighting his new work – the exhibition was called ‘New Sculptors and Painter-Sculptors’ with submissions chosen by David Sylvester. Caro exhibited two bronzes – Seated Figure and Man Holding his Foot (1955).

This exhibition was heralded in terms of how it changed the perspective of sculpting from carving to modelling through the experimentation of surface textures and materials used that conveyed an intensity in the human form not witnessed before.
