Caro was the only young British Sculptor to be invited to participate in the XXIX Venice Biennale – Woman Standing (another cast) was one of three submissions he presented. Caro noted inspiration for this sculpture to have included Jean Dubuffet and Willem de Kooning, and saw this as a moment of great change to come: 'I think this Woman Putting on a Girdle is very de Kooning, also this Woman Standing. With all these we're getting into Dubuffet, de Kooning. A moment of change this, '56-59' (Anthony Caro in conversation with Diana Eichler for 1985 thesis). Although the sculpture was originally conceived as an edition of six, only three were ever cast.
